class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We live surrounded by an unprecedented abundance of images.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Photography, cinema, social media, and now artificial intelligence continuously generate, reproduce, and circulate images designed to capture our attention and stimulate desire. Yet despite this overwhelming proliferation, it is difficult to say that human desire has become any more fulfilled. On the contrary, the more images we consume, the more something essential seems to disappear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NEO-SHUNGA begins with this paradox.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By reinterpreting the erotic woodblock prints (shunga) of Edo-period Japan through the contemporary media of AI and NFTs, this project is not merely digitizing a historical art form. Rather, it asks a more fundamental question: What is desire? What is creativity? And what kind of force can an image still possess in the age of artificial intelligence?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The seventeenth-century philosopher Baruch Spinoza understood the human being as a creature of desire. Yet for Spinoza, desire was never defined by lack. Desire was the very movement through which life seeks to expand itself. He called this power puissance\u2014the capacity to exist, to act, and to increase one&#8217;s ability to affect and be affected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Puissance is not domination. The body is celebrated rather than condemned, and desire appears not as sin but as an affirmation of life itself. Shunga expands human experience rather than reducing it. It is an image of living energy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The twentieth-century psychoanalyst Jacques Lacan, however, approached desire from an entirely different direction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For Lacan, desire is born not from fulfillment but from lack. Human beings do not ultimately desire objects themselves; they desire what always escapes them. Every satisfaction simply redirects desire toward another object. Yet this infinite circulation rarely satisfies desire. Instead, it multiplies absence. Artificial intelligence may generate millions of images, but quantity alone does not produce meaning. On the contrary, the more images accumulate, the more each individual image risks losing its density, singularity, and imaginative force.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NEO-SHUNGA proposes another possibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our aim is not to use AI to manufacture an endless stream of images. Rather, we seek to evoke the greatest possible imaginative world from the smallest possible amount of information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just as Edo-period shunga constructed astonishing emotional and symbolic universes through the economy of line and composition, NEO-SHUNGA employs contemporary digital technology not to maximize information, but to maximize meaning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Within this framework, NFTs acquire a significance beyond ownership or authentication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An NFT restores singularity to the digital image. In an environment where perfect reproduction has become effortless, it allows each encounter between artwork and viewer to recover something of the uniqueness traditionally associated with physical works of art.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The eros explored by NEO-SHUNGA is therefore not erotic stimulation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is the fundamental energy through which human beings establish relationships with the world, generate meaning, and continually recreate themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this sense, shunga differs profoundly from pornography.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Where pornography functions primarily as a mechanism for the consumption of desire, shunga transforms desire into creativity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NEO-SHUNGA seeks to continue that tradition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What the age of artificial intelligence requires is not a greater quantity of images, nor increasingly sophisticated algorithms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What it requires is the recovery of the image as a catalyst for human imagination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lacan&#8217;s conception of desire as lack has become amplified within our digital culture.
